Austin Vida and Bemba Entertainment are combining forces again to bring you another "kick ass" event for the Spring season on April 8, 2011 at Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas.

Austin Vida by itself has produced several successful showcases featuring exceptional Latin and Latino member bands at Stubb's, The Parish, Ruta Maya and Mi Casa Cantina as well several Listening Parties in association with Nacional Records and Fania Records.

Bemba Entertainment also has a long track record of exceptional showcases in Austin. Bemba Entertainment currently books world music bands for KUT 90.5fm World Music Night every Tuesday at Momo's and has produced several theme based showcases. For example, recent Soul Legends Series, tributes to Isley Brothers, Nina Simone, Rick James and Teena Marie, Bill Withers plus World Beat cruises and music on Lady Bird Lake.

This showcase will feature a local band from Austin, a regional Texas band and a touring band from Kansas City, Missouri. The local Austin, Texas band is Este Vato, a hybrid band which features a DJ, an MC, a horn section and specializes in Latin Fusion, Cumbia and Rock. The regional band from Corpus Christi, Texas is Master Blaster Sound System, a band which includes samples, loops and dance beats mixed by member DJ Dus. Master Blaster also includes talented members from La Conquista and Charanga Cake. The band creates unique music they call "Cumbia Krunk." The touring band is Making Movies, no stranger to Austin, a collective of exceptionally talented musicians which perform Indie music in English and Spanish with a definite Latin flair.

ESTE VATO!!! New Song and Sound

Este Vato, those "Bad Asses of Latin Fusion in Austin, Texas debuted a new song to their ever growing play list and added a horn section to the band.

Este Vato always strives for new and original songs, one of the things that I like about the band. They debuted "Palabra" last week at Trophy's Bar and Grill in Austin, Texas on February 5, 2011. They stayed true to their sound by remaining bilingual, maintaining the Latin Fusion sound , using an MC and DJ and most of all staying "edgy." Este Vato is not your run of the mill Latin band. They want to be and are different from other bands, Latin or not. They also strive to improve and expand their sound. The addition of a horn section does just that. They added a trombone and a trumpet player which gives the band a larger sound, more depth and more versatility. I like it all and look forward to more developments.

"Between the Sheets - An Isley Brother Tribute" A Smash Hit

Bemba Entertainment's first show of the monthly Soul Legend series took place at Momo's on Friday January 21, 2011. It was a Smash Hit! Brandon Badillo, founder of Bemba Entertainment, chose the Isley Brothers as the first Soul Legend tribute and assembled the unique Bemba Family Soul Band for the series. After hearing the band, Brandon made the right choice in creating the band for the tribute and more so in the selection of the exceptional musicians . The band had the right sound and the right orchestral mix that created the "feel" of an oldies soul band.

Brandon had vintage record giveaways, a special dance performance by Ballet Afrique and also paid tribute to the late, great Teena Marie.

It was a great night for music, dance and fun. The atmosphere was electric, the house was packed and Momo's is always a gracious host. After the show, one thing I found humorous was that the crowd didn't want to leave. They still wanted more, I guess the euphoria from "Between The Sheets" hadn't worn off.

Austin Vida: The Only Latin Free Week Showcase

Free Week, January 1-9, 2011, in Austin, Texas is over. Of all the Free Week shows that I went to, the Austin Vida showcase at Stubb's Bar-B-Q was the best show of all week. I say that because it was the only, and possibly first, show which featured a variety of exceptional bands made up of Latinos. This is the third year I've attended Free Week shows and I truly hope that the over whelming success of this Latin showcase will set the stage for future Latin showcases during Free Week and on an everyday basis. I also have to say that the success of Austin Vida's show was attributed to the selection of the bands for the showcase. The bands came from local, regional and international talent, plus they also had their own distinct sound and charisma.

Even though I call this show a "Latin" showcase, all the bands performed mainly in English including Sour Soul which is from Mexico. Latinos like all types of music. We play rock, funk, punk and alternative music in English but because of our heritage, in many cases we add a different flavor to the music we play.

Check out the live performances of the four bands that performed at Stubb's and I think you'll agree that these bands really rocked.

"Between The Sheets - An Isley Brothers Tribute"

Bemba Entertainment, known for creating unique and fun themed events, is initiating a monthly series dedicated to paying tribute to Soul Music Legends. The first of the series will be "Between The Sheets - An Isley Brothers Tribute" on Friday January 21, 2011 at Momo's in Austin, Texas.

Brandon Badillo, founder of Bemba Entertainment, has assembled a special collection of talented and soulful musicians for this series and event. The band is called Bemba Family Soul Band and Sonia Moore will front this ensemble. Sonia "Saja"Moore, a veteran singer, started singing at age 6 and at 16 was a featured singer in MC Hammer's "2 Legit 2 Quit" album. This will be the second band Brandon has assembled for a show. He put together the Bemba Beat Arkestra for his "Birthday Felabration for Fela Kuti the Creator of Afrobeat" on October 15, 2010 at Red 7. Personally, I've been to numerous Bemba Entertainment events and I thought the Birthday Felabration was the best event ever because of the Bemba Beat Arkestra and the other bands in the line-up. I expect Brandon will do even better with this Isley Brothers Tribute.

The Isley Brothers have been around for a long while, since the 1950's. They combined gospel, R&B, soul, funk, disco for a unique and soulful sound. Some of the more notable songs they've released are "Twist and Shout" in 1962, "This Old Heart of Mine" in 1966 and "It's Your Thing" in 1969, just to name a few songs. The Isley Brothers have influenced all genres of music and musicians and as a result, in 1992 were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It is fitting that we pay tribute to such soul legends to keep the legend alive and perhaps introduce the Isley Brothers to a new generation of music lovers.

Movie "from Prada to nada" Due Out January 28, 2011

When I saw the trailer, it caught my attention and thought it would be a funny, light hearted movie to see. I like the actors, the premise and it stars Latinas and is directed by a Latino, Angel Gracia. It would be nice to start the new year with a good laugh.

Synopsis: It's a whimsical fish-out-of-water story of two spoiled sisters: Nora (Camilla Belle), a law student, and Mary (Alexa Vega), an undergrad party girl, living with their father in a luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills. Mary has become so "90210" she refuses to admit she is of Mexican descent. When dad suddenly passes away, their posh lives are turned upside down. They discover they have been left penniless and are forced to move into their estranged aunt Aurelia's (Adriana Barraza) modest but lively home in the Latino-centric Boyle Heights neighborhood of East LA. They are terrified to leave their world of privilege; neither Nora nor Mary speak Spanish or have ever had to take on actual responsibility. The girls gradually adapt to their new environment; their BMW and Prius are traded for the public bus and a used car. As they embrace the culture that for so long they refused to accept, they both discover romance, the true meaning of family, and they learn that the life of PRADA actually means NADA without love, family and community. FREE WEEK January 1-9, 2011 in Austin, Texas

The first week of January is a special time for the Austin music scene, musicians and music lovers. "Free Week," January 1-9, 2011 is here. It's like an extension of the Christmas Holidays and if you're like me, I don't have a lot of money left over from all the gift giving. So Free Week comes at a perfect time. Free is the key word. "No Cover Charge" to get into many of the clubs or venues in downtown Austin, Texas, "The Live Music Capitol of the World." There are nine days of music, 100 plus local and regional bands playing nightly, all types of music to please every musical taste and it's FREE. It's like a mini-music festival which doesn't require standing in line for a costly wrist band or confined to a fenced in area. You have an open downtown area with most of, if not all, the clubs within walking distance of each other. The weather should be good, not like last year's freeze, and the atmosphere festive.

This will be my third Free Week and I have already planned the dates, times and the bands that I want to see for the week. So if you live in Austin, show your support or if you're outside of Austin, you're welcome to come for the music and fun.

The first year, one of the clubs I ventured into was Beerland and saw The Flame Trick Subs. I really liked them and their "psycho-billy." Check them out.

The second year, I was at Red 7 for some hard ass Punk. The Lower Class Brats was one of the bands that night. Hardcore, check it out.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band Kicks Ass!!!

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band was in town this weekend "Kicking Ass." They performed on Saturday December 18, 2010 at Stubb's Bar-B-Que Indoors in Austin, Texas.

I first heard of The Reverend Peyton back in May when someone gave me a copy of their latest album, "The Wages." That individual was aware of my diverse taste in music and thought I'd like it. Well, I listened to the album and just liked the hell out of it. The Big Damn Band has an interesting sound and is high energy. Their music mixes bluegrass, hillbilly and alternative rock into a sound which, for me, is reminiscent of a 60's group called Canned Heat. Canned Heat performed a song titled, "Rollin' and Tumblin'," at the Monterey International Pop Music Festival 1967 which caused a deja vue moment. But, good music is good music regardless of time.

Stubb's indoor venue was packed and the crowd was anxious. If you've heard The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band's music, then you would understand the anticipation. When the Big Damn Band came on to the stage, the crowd cheered, yelled and hollered. Below you get a taste of what the audience saw and their reaction to bands showmanship.

BRASIL MEETS COLOMBIA! with Anne Simoni, Kiko Villamizar and Frederico 7

Both countries meet at the Flamingo Cantina on Friday December 10, 2010. The line up from Brasil includes, Anne Simoni and her band, Frederico 7 & the Hashashin and from Columbia, Kiko Villamizar Orquestra. These three Austin bands represent the best of both countries and will definitely give you a taste of their musical cuisine. Anne Simoni performs tradional Brazilian rhythms including samba, bossa nova and baiao and Frederico 7 performs Brazilian music but with more of an upbeat, smooth bluesy feel. Lastly, Kiko Villamizar performs modern Columbian cumbia with a traditional folk influence.

Deciding what to do this Friday night shouldn't be too difficult with such an exceptional musical line up. Flamingo Cantina is one of my favorite Sixth Street venues because it always books great shows and this show is definitely one of the best.

I Survived the Mexican Stepgrandfather "OCCUPIED STATE" Album Release Party

I drove to San Antonio Saturday night to specifically see the Mexican Stepgrandfather perform at club Limelight. This was the first time I had been to Limelight, located on North Saint Marys Street, and I really had a great time. I would definitely go back again although the sound system could be better. I also enjoyed the eclectic but friendly crowd and the atmosphere was electric.

All the opening artists were great but the Mexican Stepgrandfather ruled the house. He did have full band and DJ support Saturday night although the new album uses more drum beats and live music rather music samples. The message is still political and very pertinent to the current anti-immigrant sentiment, social plight and relationship issues. OCCUPIED STATE has more featured artist than the first album, ESTERE-ERE-O, and less music samples which highlights Mexican Stepgrandfather lyrical skill.

When Mexican Stepgrandfather came out for his set, the crowd was anxious and happy to see him. They were cheering, jumping and dancing. Mexican Stepgrandfather poured out his heart and soul for the crowd that night and they gladly accepted the gift. At the end of the set, the crowd still wanted more. I wanted more. I can say we all left happy and content because we all had shared the same incredible experience. I extended the euphoria by listening to the OCCUPIED STATE CD on the way home.

Mexican Stepgrandfather Album Release at Limelight

I first saw Mexican Stepgrandfather perform about two years ago at the Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas. I instantly liked his music, lyrics and stage presence. After his set, I purchased the then current ESTERE-ERE-O CD and started a conversation with Marco Antonio Cervantes aka Mexican Stepgrandfather (MSG). Marco is a really nice guy. Originally from Houston, Marco has been living in San Antonio for years now. I discovered that he was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA). MSG is unique in many ways. He is not your run of the mill 19 or 20-something year old rapper. Liked I said, he is a professor. A master of the English and Spanish language, MSG uses bilingualism to create lyrics that tell a fascinating story. When I listen to his music, I just get it. I've either seen it or have been around that story he is rapping about. I also like the samples of old Mexican tunes he uses and how they're mixed.

I have seen MSG perform on two other ocassions: Una Noche de la Gloria 2009 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, Texas and at Mi Casa Cantina at Este Vato's CD Release in June 2010 in Austin.

I'm excited, MSG is having an Album Release at Limelight in San Antonio, Texas on November 20, 2010. I will be at the Limelight next Saturday because I want to see MSG perform and I want the new album, OCCUPIED STATE. I haven't asked about the album, songs or any background information because I want it to be new and fresh.

Afrofreque CD Release Party at Momo's

Last night was the Afrofreque CD Release at Momo's presented by Bemba Entertainment. This is the third time I've seen Afrofreque in the last 30 days and still want more. I saw them recently at the Birthday Felabration for Fela Kuti at Red 7 and at the Funk Freak Halloween Ball at ND at Studio 501, also produced by Bemba Entertainment, and last night at Momo's. They just won me over immediately. They are Funk, Soul, Rap, Hip Hop, R&B and more. All the people at Momo's last night were definitely moved to dance, bounce or sway to the music. I purchased Afrofreque's new CD,"Jewels and Gems," so I get to hear them anytime I want.

I do have to thank Brandon Badillo of Bemba Entertainment for continuously producing numerous themed showcases like the Birthday Felabration and the Funk Freak Halloween Ball which have been great events and experiences. Brandon has the knack of selecting the right musical talent, the right venue and the ability to create a unique experience that people want to attend and then look forward to the next event.

The musical line up last night included Dawni McCray, Adam Rodgers, Soulkitchen, Afrofrique and Courtney Sanchez and SWAY. I did get to record video of Soul Kitchen, Afrofreque and Courtney Sanchez and SWAY. It was an exceptional night for music.

Making Movies At Momo's November 2, 2010

Making Movies, a band from Kansas City, Missouri, is on tour and performed at Momo's in Austin, Texas on Tuesday November 2 , 2010 for KUT 90.5fm World Music Night presented by Bemba Entertainment. Making Movies is a band which performs both in English and Spanish but the Latin influence is the dominant flavor. Their music is very Rock, Latin and Pop and really appeals to very broad audience. On Tuesday, aside from their exceptional play list, they played a White Stripes cover song, "Seven Army Nation." To put it mildly, I liked the hell out of their version of the cover version. The song started out with a Latin flair but then morphed into a Santana cover then back to "Seven Army Nation." I was a fantastic blend of two songs and artist. Barrio Massive En El Mero Hueso at Una Noche De La Gloria October 9, 2010

Una Noche De La Gloria, presented by Contemporary Arts and Literature Organization (CALO), is an event in the West Side of San Antonio, Texas which showcases local talent in the arts. This includes visual arts, fashion, film, music, theater and spoken word performances at the historic Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. This is the second time that I've attended Una Noche De La Gloria. I enjoyed it so much last year that I had return again. I go more for the exceptional music but I enjoy all the activities. This year's main stage line up included: JD Diego Bernal, La Guerrilla, Pop Pistol, Piñata Protest, Bombasta and Special Guest, The Sequence.

La Guerrilla, the international, Latin, gypsy ensemble from Austin, Texas band and one of my favorites.

Pop Pistol, from San Antonio, incorporates a "very interesting blend of indie rock steeped in electronic roots. Progressive broken beat drums coupled with an ethereal rhythm section of synths and samples and haunting vocal delivery for a complex, multi-dimensional sound." -Study Breaks Magazine, UTSA
This is the first time I saw Pop Pistol and I was really impressed with their performance, music and sound. This is a band I want to see again and a band that you'll be hearing more about very soon.

Pinata Protest, is a San Antonio "accordion powered punk rock-y-roll band." I also add "conjunto punk band" as part of the description because of it's rocking Mexican roots.

Bombasta is the epitome of the new Urban Latino sound that has emerged in cities like San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and all over which incorporates all the intrinsic influences of Latin, Rock, Conjunto, Traditional Roots and Electronic music. When Bombasta performs, you know a party is going to break out and you better be prepared to throw down some moves!

Jazz Puerto Rico Brings ¡Sabor! to Momo's

I went to Momo's on September 28, 2010, my usual Tuesday night hang out, to see what Bemba Entertainment had in store. The line up listed Jazz Puerto Rico, Cerronato and Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos. Now I'm real familiar with Cerronato and Bubba Hernandez, they are a couple of most my favorite bands that I always enjoy seeing. Jazz Puerto Rico ,though, peaked my interest. I had never heard of the band and really didn't know what type of music they played. Well, it turns out that Jazz Puerto Rico plays Salsa, Cha Cha and Merengue. I've heard and seen several "Salsa" bands and some are good and some are so-so. Jazz Puerto Rico is really good. I was totally impress with their music and musicianship. I liked their sound, the variety of music and they were tight or seamless. When it comes to bands, I like a band with a brass section. The Jazz Puerto Rico section had three trombones and a baritone sax. This band could hold their own in any Salsa club anywhere. The only thing that concerned me about Jazz Puerto Rico was that they are not an active participant in social media. There's just no information on the web. I guess my blog and YouTube videos may be a beginning? Jazz Puerto Rico is a great band and definitely deserves to be seen and heard.

Austin Vida's "Mi Gente" Salsa Happy Hour at The Parish in October

Austin Vida is teaming up with The Parish, a 6th Street hot spot, to bring "Mi Gente" a Tueday night Salsa Happy Hour in October. The Salsa Happy Hour starts at 6:00 PM with music, dancing and a $3.50 Mojito drink special and ends at 9:00 PM.

Now, a happy hour is a happy hour is a happy! To make this happy hour a "Salsa Happy Hour," who else than DJ Orion, in conjunction with Fania Records could truly make it happen. DJ Orion, one of the members of Peligrosa All-Stars DJ's, spins tunes from an extensive list of Fania Records artists and others. This happy hour highlighted the late great Tito Puente. Fania Records is celebrating their release of Tito Puente two-disk anthology, El Rey. You know, El Rey is a must for all true Salseros, Latin music lovers and of course, DJ's.

I attended this happy hour and had a great time. I like The Parish, the ambiance and sound system is exceptional, the crowd was intimate and the music was made for dancing.

The next "Mi Gente" Salsa Happy Hour will be on October 19 at The Parish, located at 214-c E 6th Street from 6:00-9:00 PM. Ages 21 and up.

Este Vato, The Raspas and Stars Collide at Trophy's

I went to Trophy's Bar and Grill, one of my favorite Austin music venues because of it's comfortable neighborhood bar atmosphere, on September 18, 2010. I specifically went to see three bands on the line-up that night. The first was my favorite Austin Latin Fusion band, Este Vato. The second band was The Raspas, a Reggae band I first saw about a year ago at The Amsterdam. Lastly, Stars Collide, a rock band I hadn't seen but has been on my "must see list." Frank "FAAR" Ramirez, drummer for Este Vato is also the drummer for Stars Collide.

It was a great night for music. There was a festive crowd, it's always friendly and there's a feel or a bond among the crowd because they all know and follow the same bands. They feel comfortable yelling, screaming encouragement at the bands and definitely like dancing to their music.

Check out Trophy's, it' on South Congress Ave., Este Vato, The Raspas and Star Collide soon. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Este Vato introduced two new songs. The first "Levántate," which they have worked on for about a month. The second song, with no title as of yet, they wrote the night before. I really like both songs because they have a strong solid sound and beat. The two songs are definitely Este Vato trademark songs.

The Raspas "Poor Man Style" a great Reggae song that has become a favorite.

Stars Collide has a strong Rock sound and singer. They perform the song, "Better."

Este Vato at Beauty Bar on September 1st

After looking at my social calender, I realized that it had been three months since I last saw Este Vato perform. It wasn't that I didn't want to see Este Vato. My schedule just didn't seem to coincide with their performance dates. It got to the point where I needed an Este Vato "fix."

It's no secret that Este Vato is my favorite band. I like their unique Latin Fusion sound created with a DJ and an Mecee. I first saw Este Vato back in October 2008 at Flamingo Cantina. We definitely have a history and I've lost count of how many times I've seen them perform. We are friends and I support them as often as I can. On September 1, 2010 I finally got to see Este Vato perform at the Beauty Bar in Austin, Texas. Every time I see them perform, I swear they sound better than the previous time I saw them.

Another Fantastic Austin Vida Showcase

Austin Vida put together another fantastic Latin showcase recently at Ruta Maya. They brought in four "in demand" musical groups and artist that provided music to please all musical taste. The line-up included from Austin, Arthur Yoria, JEZ, La Guerrilla and from San Antonio, Bombasta. All these bands, I noticed, have a solid fan base which are dedicated and travel near and far to see them perform.

I do have to say that Austin Vida has the knack of recognizing exceptional Latin talent and bringing them together for consistently successful showcases of fun and dance. I've been to all of Austin Vida showcases and based on audience attendance, the amount of dancing, the amount of laughter and fun, I'd definitely give this one "Six Flags."

World Beat Cruise with Jai Roots

I had so much fun on the last World Beat Cruise that I again booked another passage. There are several reasons why I was back on the cruise. First, Bembe Entertainment knows how to throw a party. Second, you have a large Capital Cruises party boat on Lady Bird Lake in downtown scenic Austin, Texas. Third, you have liquor, food, DJ Jah Karma and live music. Fourth, Jai Roots & the Herb-n-Café Project was the band for the cruise. I had recently seen Jai Roots and the Project at Momo's and immediately liked them. Jai Roots is very charismatic and has a striking stage presence. The Project is strong musically and cranks up the Reggae and World Beat music. If I had to be on a party boat for "a three hour cruise," I would definitely pick Jai Roots and the Project.

I had not been on an Austin lake cruise in a couple of years. So when the World Beat Cruise by Bemba Entertainment was promoted with food, drink and music for $25.00, I had to go. The cruise was on July 29, 2010 on Capital Cruises' double deck "Pride and Joy". It's a "Three hour cruise" on Lady Bird Lake in downtown scenic Austin, Texas and after a busy day, the cruise provides an excellent way to unwind. I met some great people, enjoyed great music and the serenity of being on the lake with the warm summer breeze. The Austin skyline and sunset provides an exceptional scenic backdrop to enjoy and the numerous Austin lake bridges provides an echo chamber for the music and an unusual childlike joy as you shout at the top of you lungs as the boat goes under the bridges.

All the beautiful people were on the cruise socializing, eating, drinking their favorite beverages and just enjoying themselves.

Frederico 7 and The Hashashin provided the party music along with DJ Macumbeats.

I've attended many of Bemba Entertainment's events and this cruise was the best yet. The next World Beat Cruise is on Thursday August 19, 2010 so make plans now to be on the party boat. The entertainment will be provided by Jai Roots & the Herb-n-Café Project, a new rocking band to the Austin music scene, that will get the party started with Reggae and World Music. Jai Roots: A New Star in the "Live Music Capitol of the World" Constellation

You'll usually find me at Momo's on Tuesday nights for World Music Night sponsored by KUT 90.5fm/kut.org and presented by Bemba Entertainment. Brandon Badillo of Bemba Entertainment brings together exceptional musical talent, both world and local, for all to enjoy every week. Plus, KUT is the ideal sponsor because they are the only Austin radio station that promotes world music.

This past Tuesday I went to Momo's to specifically see Jai Roots. I had never heard of Jai Roots but did check out his Myspace page, jairoots.com and YouTube videos. I liked what I saw and heard so I decided to see for myself. I saw Jai Roots & the Herb-n-Café Project perform. I was amazed at what I saw and heard. First, Jai Roots, from St. Croix, is very charismatic and has the exotic island look. His voice perfectly fits all the music he sings, which includes World, Urban, Latin, Reggae and Roots. Second, the band is exceptional. They are all in sync and sound like they've played together for years even though this is a new group. They are all exceptional musicians and when featured in a song, they were flawless and enhanced the song and music experience. The crowd in attendance was also in agreement. They were all having fun and in the mood for dancing. Jai Roots & the Herb-n-Café Project, from San Antonio, Texas, is trying to break into the tough and competitive Austin music market and personally, I feel they have what it takes to become successful not only in Austin but regionally and nationally.

El Tule and Radio la Chusma at Flamingo Cantina

Two great bands with two different sounds this Friday at Flamingo Cantina. First, Austin's favorite, El Tule specializes in Cumbia, Salsa and Merengue that lifts the spirit and moves the soul. El Tule has been very busy this summer with numerous performances throughout Central Texas and Austin. Second, Radio La Chusma, an El Paso, Texas band, "Representing the beauty and complexity of the border culture, the reggae, cumbia/rock....uplifting the people with their message and hard hitting rhymes."

I've seen both bands perform individually. I recently caught El Tule in San Antonio's Main Plaza and saw Radio la Chusma last September in San Antonio's Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center for Una Noche de Gloria: Barrio Massive En El Mero Hueso. Friday night should be "Una Noche de Gloria" as well with both bands a Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas.

Making Movies: A Band Making a Name

Making Movies, a Latin alternative rock band from Kansas City, Missouri, was at Momo's last night. They're touring to promote their new CD, IN DEO SPERAMUS. I had read about Making Movies last year in Café magazine and in their web publication. They drew my attention at that time and when I heard they were coming to the two day Pachanga Latino Music Festival 2010 I was excited. Unfortunately part of the festival was canceled and Making Movies would not perform. I guess I would have to wait for another time. Well, I lucked out because Making Movies finally made it to Austin, Texas. Bemba Entertainment brought in Making Movies for the weekly "World Music Night" sponsored by KUT 90.5fm at Momo's.

Making Movies has definitely made a buzz in the music industry in a short time. Their music was featured on AOL Musica and NPR Weekend Edition, "La Marcha" video is available on iTunes and Making Movies has toured with Grammy winners, Aterciopelados.

I like Making Movies. They blend all of my favorite Latin alternative bands into one creative and very talented group. They perform both in English and Spanish. Their music has influences of Latin, Afrobeat and also combines new music with old Latin and Spanish influences. I also like that their music is edgy and bold but not in your face. The percussion in the band adds depth and also gives it a full Latin flavor. Check these guys out soon and buy their In Deo Speramus CD.

This morning I was watching the Monterey International Pop Music Festival 1967 on the Sundance Channel and heard a song by Canned Heat called "Rollin' & Tumble." By coincidence earlier this morning, I was playing a CD by The Reverend Payton's Big Damn Band titled "Everything's Rising." When I heard "Rollin' & Tumble," I immediately thought to myself,"wait a minute, Reverend Payton sounds just like Canned Heat." Amazing! two bands approximately 42 years apart sounding so similar or is it "deja vu?" You tell me. Is it a sign?

JEZ: New Star in Austin

I'm always looking for the next big artist or band, both locally and beyond. I'm not in the music business but I do share my finds with people who are. You could call me an avid music fan or crazy, hence the name "Manny Go Crazy." Every Tuesday at Momo's, Brandon Badillo of Bemba Entertainment presents World Music Night sponsored by KUT 90.5fm/kut.org. Brandon has provided numerous of my new discoveries because he books many exceptional and diverse acts for World Music Night, as well as other venues and activities.

I was looking through Bemba's and Momo's calenders, the opening act for Tuesday July 13th was JEZ. I had never heard of JEZ so I looked JEZ up. I checked out the MySpace page and YouTube for info and music. There was also a website with an e-mail sign up. I liked what I had seen and heard so I decided I would go. Brandon had also sent me a music link on Facebook of JEZ's current album. When I got to Momo's and JEZ started their set, I was just blow away. Do you remember the Maxwell's man in chair being blown away by the speaker ad? (click on link) Well that was me Tuesday night. Jezarey Barbazcy, known simply as JEZ, is from Houston, Texas and now living in Austin. His band at present lives in Houston. Their music was a combination of Rock, Latin, Folk and Pop. I was impressed with the lyrics and exceptional musicianship of the band. Their music kept me mesmerized for their entire set. I also heard many musical influences in some of their songs. For instance in "Aire" I heard U2 and in other songs I heard Mana, John Mayer to name a few artist.

I've seen a lot bands. These bands have been in various stages of success. They range from just starting out to bands who are touring nationally. JEZ is already at star level waiting to be re-discovered in a new setting, Austin, Texas the "Live Music of the World." The buzz has already started with JEZ's appearance on Fox TV's Good Day-Live Music segment on Tuesday morning, Momo's in the evening, July 13th plus my little blog. I anticipate great things for JEZ and once you see JEZ perform you'll know why.

El Tule: "Working Man's Cumbia"

El Tule has a song off their El Tule Volumen II CD titled "Working Man's Cumbia" that could have been written for the band. They are always working somewhere every week, it seems. I've been following El Tule for a couple of years and I would give them the title of "Hardest Working Band in Austin" and possibly the world? They also have two CDs, corresponding videos and working on new projects. If you check their Upcoming Shows on their Myspace page, you'll see they're booked until October. So if you need a band, El Tule's schedule is getting full fast so reserve your date now.

I like El Tule because they have a good variety of music which includes Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Latin. They have a strong solid sound. I especially like how they put their heart and soul into their music and performances. When you see them perform you'll know what I mean.

Recently I traveled to San Antonio's Main Plaza to see El Tule perform. I invited familia to come see El Tule because I had told them all how great they were. You know Mexican families are big, with brothers, sisters, Mom, Dad, tios, tias, primos, primas and abuelos and abuelitas and as George Lopez would say "all in one car." We had a blast! If you haven't seen El Tule, they're coming to a venue or city near you.

Arthur Yoria: Songwriter and Singer Extraordinaire

Every once in a while it seems I fall into a musical rut. I go see my favorite bands and listen to my favorite music over and over again. And sometimes to tell you the truth, it seems there are periods where there are no new up and coming bands or talent. I like to keep it fresh by discovering new bands, artist and music. I'll read tons of blogs, scour the The Austin Chronicle, do512.com, austin360 and social media to find those new artist. I will also ask musicians, people I meet at venues and people in the know, "Who do I need to go see?" I get various suggestions and many times I'll make it a point go see a recommended band. Occasionally, I'll come across a band or two that have that something extra special.

I went through a rut this past winter. It was a combination of the extremely cold weather and there just wasn't anybody new out there. Well, on a cold December night I decided to go to Momo's and thanks to Bemba Entertainment I came across Arthur Yoria. Arthur was the last set, the cold kept people at home and it was midnight. When Arthur started playing, I immediately knew Arthur was special. I literally said out loud, "damn this guy is good!" Arthur ingeniously used recorded loops, samples and beats to create music I've never heard before. I liked his stage presence and his demeanor. At that point I decided I had to know more about Arthur the singer/songwriter/musician, meet him and in my small way promote Arthur's music. I've seen Arthur perform several times since then plus I'm also on his e-mail list and Facebook friends. I've gotten to know Arthur on a personal level and he's a down to earth good guy.

Briefly, Arthur was born in Chicago, lived in Houston and circuitously is now in Austin. Arthur has a long list of accomplishment and credits that include songs in TV show, songs in movies and extensive touring. What I'm most impressed with is his variety and extensive catalog of music. When you listen to the lyrics, you get a glimpse of Arthur the person, his heart and his soul and his music delivers the message. Arthur is of Colombian heritage so his music will also include songs in Spanish. Arthur Yoria is that artist that got me out of my rut and brought a breath of fresh air to the Austin music scene. Put Arthur Yoria on your artist/band must see list and you to will say "damn this guy is good" too.

Free Week 2010 in Austin, Texas: Red 7

Every January for the last several years, the Red River District has "Free Week." Basically there is "No Cover" to get into the clubs and see tons of bands for 10 days. It is a huge event for music in Austin and many other clubs, not on Red River Street, have joined the annual event. I love Free Week because I can go to the clubs and see the bands that perhaps weren't on the top of my "must see" list although I do want to see them. This year one of the clubs I went to was Red 7 to see three local hardcore Punk bands: Sober Daze, Krum Bums and Lower Class Brats.

I've gone to see a couple punk bands before but this event was the most raucous. I'll usually stay as far back from the stage and the pit because it can get really rough. This time around I decided to get closer to the stage to take a few pictures when all of a sudden I felt someone pushing me into the pit. I turned around and got some kid in a headlock. I looked at him and he looked at me and I then pushed him into the pit. I quickly proceeded to the rear of the club and stayed there.

The bands were great, the music was hardcore and the audience generated a fantastic energy. This blog is definitely late but the videos were just recently downloaded by Red River Noise. Check out the video and see what I saw and experienced.

Note of Caution: the Pit is not for the meek or weak of heart. The possibility of getting kicked, punched, pushed around and getting hit with a beer bottle is extremely great.

The Event of the Summer Just Happened at Momo's

Last night the event of the summer took place at Momo's. Three spectacular bands created a night of party, fun and magic. They were the two time Grammy Award winner, Bubba Hernandez, and his band Los Super Vatos, Grammy nominated Tortilla Factory and up and coming, Huerta Culture. Momo's was packed, people were dancing, enjoying the warm summer night and socializing on the outdoor deck. Bemba Entertainment again put together a collection of great and diverse bands for an exceptional showcase. I recommend that you check out World Music Night sponsored by KUT90.5fm/kut.org every Tuesday night at Momo's to get a taste of Bemba's work.

The bands provided a variety of entertainment and diverse mix of music. Bubba opened the showcase with Cumbia, Rock, Latin and Polka plus humorous interaction with the audience. Tortilla Factory continued the legend with their specialized mix of Salsa, Merengue, Funk and Latin and an impressive stage presence. Lastly, Huerta Culture closed the show with the exceptional combination of Columbian Cumbia, Folk and Root music. I do have to say that this is the first time that I've seen Huerta Culture as a fully formed band and also have to say that I was very impressed. Huerta Culture's distinct sound and music draws you in and takes you on a "cultural" trip.

Tortilla Factory, Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos and Huerta Culture at Momo's on June 25th, 2010

I like discovering new, up and coming bands and following their progress. This time on June 25th, two iconic and legendary bands, Tortilla Factory and Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos, plus a new up and coming band, Huerta Culture will perform at Momo's in Austin, Texas. Mark your calender because this is one of the biggest event of the summer.

I saw Grammy nominated Tortilla Factory perform at Momo's on March 9th of this year and got reacquainted with the legendary 1970's Texas Chicano band. In order to continue the legend, founder Tony Guerrero has handed the reins of the band to his daughter Laura and son Alfredo Guerrero. Although Tortilla Factory still performs Texas Chicano/Tejano music, the new generation has incorporated Funk, Salsa, R&B and Rappers to appeal to a broader audience. This new formula is working well because when I check my music sources and calenders of events, Tortilla Factory's name shows up frequently and at various venues. I recently saw Tortilla Factory perform at Austin's premier Panchanga Latino Music Festival 2010 on May 22nd. Original member Bobby "El Charo Negro" Butler performed with the band. The audience consisted of young and old and based on the crowd's response to the music, Tortilla Factory pleased their loyal established fans and made new ones that will help continue the legend.

On a personal note, I had the privilege of meeting Tony "Ham" Guerrero, his wife Norma, daughter Laura and Bobby Butler at Pachanga. I felt very comfortable talking to the family, there was a genuine warmth and interest. We talked about music, family and upcoming events. I see now how the Tortilla Factory family has been in existence for 37 years because it's not only about the music.

I first saw Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vato back in October of 2008 at Flamingo Cantina. I really didn't know what to expect because this was the first time seeing Bubba and the band perform. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. They describe their music as "Fiery Bilingual Cumbia-based Pop Rock Songs of Intrigue, Naughtiness, Heartbreak and Other Steamy Delights." I liked the heavy bass, the rhythmic percussion and the dance party feel the music evokes. I've seen Bubba y Los Super Vatos several times since and I look forward to seeing them time and time again. I've gotten to know Cenobia Xavier "Bubba" Hernandez and think he's one "Super Vato." He was a member of the two time Grammy Award winning Polka Rock band, Brave Combo and Grammy nominated, Polka Freak Out. I like talking to Bubba because he's very creative with his music and projects and has positive outlook in life, he has a passion about what he does.

I also saw Huerta Culture perform at Momo's back in January of this year. The band didn't have a name at the time but Kiko Villamizar was just getting the band together. Huerta Culture is now well established and creating a buzz and following here in Austin. I like their music because "Huerta Culture mixes various sounds of Latino rhythms from Cuban son, salsa, Guajiro-style music to Colombian cumbia and reggae fusion." (Source: Austin Vida) It's been a while since I've seen Kiko and Huerta Culture so I'm really anxious to seeing them Friday.

This showcase promises to be an exceptional night of music by a collection of extraordinary Latin musicians. Come to Momo's for the music, for the dancing and the ambiance.

Este Vato is officially debuting their self titled CD, "Este Vato," this Saturday and performing the songs from the CD plus new material. Este Vato specializes in Latin fusion, Mexican Cumbia and Rock with a skilled Emcee and a DJ to give their music more depth and uniqueness. I can honestly say there is no other band like Este Vato or comes close. They have already established themselves as a premier band in the Austin music scene and this new CD gives Este Vato the complete promotional package every band strives for. Este Vato is a must see musical experience.

Piñata Protest is another favorite band. I came across the band at In The Flesh Tattoo Studio loft a couple of years ago. When I heard they were a Punk/Rock/Conjunto band, I needed to see them. They are amazing and I catch them whenever they're in Austin. Piñata Protest is another unique band. I can't say I've ever heard a band like Piñata Protest before and was glad to see them again at Pachanga Latino Music Festival 2010 on May 22, 2010. Piñata Protest also has a new CD, "Plethora," out at this time and put them in the must category as well.

I first saw rapper Marco Cervantes, aka Mexican Stepgrandfather a couple of years ago at the Flamingo Cantina with Este Vato. I really liked MSG's lyrics, music and style. MSG was different. He was not a young teen or a twenty something, he is a mature brother, he is originally from Houston but lives in San Antonio, Texas and more interesting is the fact that Marco Cervantes is Assistant Professor of Mexican American Studies at University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA). MSG combines all these factors in his music and tells a story of the immigrant struggle and personal life experiences. You have to see MSG. Also, a must see performer.

The last time I saw Rocky Reyna of Este Vato, I told him I'd like to see an Este Vato show with Mexican Stepgrandfather. Thanks to Rocky for fulfilling my request and with such a special event.

I like a lot of bands and I have a lot of favorites. I especially like out of the ordinary bands. This event has three unique and exceptional bands that will provide a night of extraordinary entertainment, dancing and fun you'll remember for a long time. You will also become avid fans of these groups as I have. Hope to see you there.

"La Guerrilla Day" Proclaimed by City of Austin, Texas May 27, 2010

A performance and proclamation ceremony will be held at 5:30 PM in the Council chambers located at 301 West 2nd Street. The event is open to the public and especially all La Guerrilla fans. Come show your support and appreciation for the band that truly is representative of all that is "Austin" and "Live Music Capitol of the World."

I've listened to "El Existential" and without a doubt this CD is more than exceptional. It contains hard hitting Cumbias and Salsa. The Cumbia that will get you moving is "La Conozco," I will re-play this song two to three times because the high energy beat and rhythm just won't let you go. "Montañozo" is my next favorite with an upbeat tempo and I like the sound of the 60/70's sounding organ typical to that era. As for Salsa, I especially like "Juan Tenorio" because of "EL Judio Maravilloso" Larry Harlow's influence. He has a special sound and feel in his music. The sound is smooth and velvety and the beat is not too fast or too slow. All the songs on this album are great, I think you'll like them all but you'll also have your favorites. One of the things that impressed be about this album is how it was made. I spoke to some of the guys at Momo's recently after performing in side project, Money Chicha and it turns out the band just got together and started recording the music. The formalities of making an album were put aside and the magic was unleashed. I believe had Grupo followed the usual recording protocol, the end product would be much different and not as free flowing and artistic.

The Big Squeeze

I attended The Big Squeeze Statewide Accordion Contest Semi-Finals on Saturday at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. The Big Squeeze was presented by Texas Folklife and co-sponsored in Austin, Texas by the Bullock Museum and the Austin Latin Music Association (ALMA). This was the first time I had attended this event but it definitely won't be the last. I had a lot of fun, the music was great, the talent was exceptional and based on the audience's reaction and participation, they agree with my assessment. The Bob Bullock museum is an exceptional facility and it was the perfect location for the event. Besides the contest, I also got to see the current exhibit "American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music." The exhibit is interactive, very informative and is a must see for all music lovers. The exhibit will be available for view until May 9th. So get to the museum as soon as possible.

I always look forward to Latin Music Month in Austin, Texas during May because I know I can catch all my favorite Latin bands at one of the numerous venues or events. Plus ALMA puts together a comprehensive calender of events so that I don't have to search for my favorite bands, show dates or times and venues. Typically I'll search Austin Vida, do512, The Chrontourage, The Austin Chronicle, Austin360, The Austin American-Statesman, AhoraSi and read numerous blogs to compile a similar list for the week and sometimes the month. Lastly, the best event of Latin Music Month-Pachanga Latino Music Festival. I've attend the past two festival and have had a great time and have seen spectacular bands like Nortec Collective-Bostich y Fussible and Mexican Institute of Sound (M.I.S.). This year will be even better with major headliners like Bomba Stereo, Pilar Diaz, Pacha Massive and several local and regional bands. For me May is the official opening for Summer music and outdoor concerts. Hope to see you at some of the events.

My Facebook friend, John Montemayor from the Vinyl Dharma band posted this video on his wall and I just had to share it with you. When I first saw it I was rolling laughing on the floor. I've been to El Taquito to see some excellent bands. I like the venue because the stage setting is intimate. You are up close and personal to the band and the sound system is pretty good for the small setting. The food is excellent but waiting to get you food is unreasonable. I hope El Taquito works on this issue because it could definitely work against them in the customer satisfaction area. Come see Kalua if you are a fan already or become a new fan once you hear and see them perform.

"Groovin" on a Sunday Afternoon with Los Texas Wranglers

After seeing the entries in do512, austin360.com and other local periodicals advertising Los Texas Wranglers at Mi Casa Tamales and Cantina every Sunday from 3:00-7:00 PM, I knew I had to go see them. It's been about a year since I've seen Los Texas Wranglers at the 40th Annual Fiesta Amistad in Round Rock, Texas and you'll be able to see them again this year at the 41st Annual Fiesta Amistad. I'm sorry to say that I missed Los Texas Wranglers at the SXSW Tejano Music Showcase on March 18, 2010 although I did get to see Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution and Little Joe y La Familia. I did record and downloaded videos of Ruben Ramos and Little Joe which you can see on my Youtube MannyGoCrazy Channel.

It felt kind of unusual going to 6th Street during the day because I tend to go downtown in the evening where clubs open their doors at 9:00 PM and the music starts around 10:30 PM or later and concludes at 1-2:00 AM. I do have to admit that I kind of liked this day time event because there's daylight, I didn't have to pay for parking, the streets weren't crowded with drunks and who doesn't like Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon? I also have to admit that I like Mi Casa Tamales and Cantina. I have seen a lot of good bands at Mi Casa, eaten a few tamales and drunk a few beers. I like the comfortable atmosphere, the long bar and there's ample seating.

Even though Los Texas Wranglers were scheduled to perform 3-7:00 PM, they did have an opening band. The 211 Band performed approximately an hour and played Latin, Blues, Rock and Country. I liked the band's music, found them very entertaining and especially liked their interaction with the audience. I also had a chance to talk to Chris Cruz and find out more about the band. Like many Austin bands they're trying to establish a presence and a following. In talking to a lot of emerging bands, it a though road but the successful bands have a plan which includes social media, ie Facebook, Myspace, twitter and building alliances with other bands, both locally and regionally. Opening for Los Texas Wranglers is a step in the right direction because it introduces the band to a new audience and vice versa. Good luck and stay with it.

The Texas Wranglers also brought in a Ballet Folklorico Floor Show who performed "Baile de los Viejitos." The Texas Wranglers try to provide a show for the whole family to enjoy.

Los Texas Wranglers play all types of music and one thing that I've noticed is that people like to dance when they play. I saw this couple dance to most of the band's songs and I thought to myself, I wish I had their grace, style and stamina. I just enjoyed watching them dance.

Los Texas Wranglers have been together since 1999 and have become the standard for all other Conjunto bands to achieve. All the members are musically accomplished and have had or been part of other bands. The band specializes in Tejano/Conjunto music and also excels in Country, Blues and anything that makes you want to dance. Some of the awards Los Texas Wranglers have received individually and collectively at the recent Austin Music Awards include:

Los Skarnales at Flamingo Cantina on April 17th

I finally got to see Los Skarnales on February 20, 2010 at the Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas after missing their shows for a couple of years because of scheduling conflicts. I'm glad to say they are coming back to the Flamingo Cantina on April 17, 2010. Los Skarnales play a fantastic Mexican Ska like no other. They are very high energy and entertaining and if you're not dancing or bouncing up and down with their music, you just don't have a pulse. If you're a fan, be there and if you have never seen them or heard of them, here's you chance to have some fun.

Los Skarnales will also share the stage with Benjy Myaz and Spiritual.

You can also catch these three bands at the Austin Reggae Festival 2010 Friday through Sunday, April 16-18 at Auditorium Shores.

Review: Austin Vida and Go Hispano Present Sexy Marvin

If you weren't at Stubb's Bar-B-Q on Wednesday, you missed the best show of the year. If you're asking, "Who in the hell is Sexy Marvin? Is he a guy? or What?" I had the same reaction when I heard about the showcase. I did go to Myspace to check out Sexy Marvin, a four piece band from Monterrey, Mexico, and I have to say I liked what I heard. I was also impressed by the bands they have shared a stage with, like Cold Play and Killers. I really didn't know what to expect but after seeing Sexy Marvin on Wednesday night, I have to say now I am a fan. I can see why they opened for Cold Play and Killer, they are that fantastic. Sexy Marvin has an Indie, Rock sound which everyone will like. Check out the video of "Follow" I recorded at Stubb's and you come to your own conclusion.

The other band on the line up, Vinyl Dharma, is a band that I had heard of but have never seen. They are a local five piece Austin band that won MTV2's On the Rise Contest and MTV2 also recorded a Vinyl Dharma performance at Stubb's which was featured on MTV2's "Austin Week" in December 2008. Vinyl Dharma is an Indie band with Electronica and Alternative influences which fit in perfectly with Sexy Marvin and they also blew me away. I also had an opportunity to talk to John Montemayor, guitar, about the band, their music and their Brownville, Texas background. John is a really nice guy, very friendly and was gracious enough to give me a copy of their Vinyl Dharma EP. I've been playing the EP over and over again and it's great. Get a copy if you can. Check the video I recorded at Stubb's of Vinyl Dharma performing "The Sunshine Rave."

The opening band, Rubik, is also from Monterrey and is a band that I last saw at Ruta Maya back in January. They play Alternative, Grunge and Britpop and I have also become a solid fan of Rubik. They played exceptionally well and complimented both Vinyl Dharma and Sexy Marvin music. I was again lucky to receive another CD, this time a copy of Rubik's "Abril" CD from Angie, the lead vocal and front girl. Thank you Angie and hope to see Rubik soon. I'm sorry to say I was unable to record Rubik that night but please view a Ruta Maya performance.

The showcase was presented by Austin Vida and Go Hispano and produced by Vivo Alternativo. I have to say they put together an exceptional line up and are to be congratulated for their creativity. There are other showcases in the making and you can bet I'll be there. Will you?

If you know of Bill Withers, you probably know him from my favorite song "Ain't No Shine," "Lovely Day" or "Lean On Me" from movie soundtrack "Lean On Me." Bill has several other great songs but you'll have to come to the show.

"Still Bill", a documentary of soul icon Bill Withers will also be screened at the tribute. So you have music and film all in one show. Hope to see you there.

They are a band that combines Rock, Cumbia, Latin, Fusion and recently Funk. Their songs convey a message of pride in heritage, the struggles of our fore fathers and families and the power that we have collectively. Although the subject matter is on the serious side, the music still rocks. Este Vato just released their new CD as well. Come see them perform and also get their CD.

El Tule is also a very popular and a well established band in Austin. "Musically the band projects the Latin soul that Cumbias, Salsa and Merengues were meant to have." El Tule also released their second CD in November 2009 and you should also purchase their Volumen II to complete your music library.

This showcase is one you shouldn't miss. It offers four of the best Latin bands in Austin and regionally that have a broad appeal. Rubik is an Alternative/Grunge/Brit Pop band from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. They have been together for seven years and their popularity has steadily grown in Mexico and now in the U.S. They first came to Austin in November 2009 to play El Sol y La Luna, a popular venue on Sixth Street. I did get to see Rubik in February at Ruta Maya Coffee House and Organic Coffee Importing in South Austin, Texas and they made more fans with their fantastic music and sound. I do have to say that I do like the rapport that they establish with the audience, it's warm and witty. I'm looking forward to seeing them perform again because I became a fan as well.

Tortilla Factory: The Legend Continues

Tortilla Factory performed at Momo's World Music KUT 90.5 presented by Bemba Entertainment on Tuesday night in Austin, Texas and it was history in the making. I remember the name Tortilla Factory back in the early 70's and hearing them on the radio. They played primarily Texas "Chicano Music" and they filled dance halls throughout Texas and beyond. They were one of the premier dance bands out of Texas along with Little Joe and The Latinaires, Sunny and the Sunliners, the Royal Jesters and the Latin Breed, just to name a few. The Tortilla Factory originated in 1973 and here they are 2010 and still making music.

I had lost track of the Tortilla Factory for several years but was happy to see the band resurface last year with a Grammy nominated CD, "Tortilla Factory and All That Jazz." When I heard that they were going to play at Momo's, I knew I had to go see them. I really didn't know what to expect because I still had visions of the 70's Chicano Music and knew that they had incorporated Salsa into their music. When the Tortilla Factory took the stage, Wow!, they had a complete orchestra of 12 musicians and a commanding stage presence. The five piece horn section, for me, was the focal point and I couldn't wait to hear them. The band's founder, Tony "Ham" Guerrero, was present off stage although the band was under the direction of his son, Alfredo Antonio Guerrero, and his daughter, Laura Lynne Guerrero. Alfredo and Luara were also the lead vocals for all the songs.

The first song was a funky, bluesy song which reminded me of The Tower of Power, which I've seen perform. I was blown away by the beat and the strong, solid brass section and exceptional musical arrangements. Tortilla Factory also mixed in some Salsa music plus used rappers to give a couple 0f their songs an urban appeal. I saw the band perform from 8:00 PM to 12:oo AM and was surprised that the band didn't play any Chicano or Tejano music, mainly because that's where it all started.

Overall it was a fantastic night and I was very glad to see a new and updated Tortilla Factory. They are in fact a legend and have created some fantastic music and history since 1973 . For many reasons, I saw this performance as a debut of the "New Generation" Tortilla Factory. First, I never imagined Tortilla Factory at Momo's. I envisioned them at a huge ballroom or at the Palmer Event Center playing to a large crowd. Momo's is a great venue but does not have the capacity of a dance hall. You play at Momo's to expose yourself to a new audience or possibly crossover. Second, Alfredo and Luara at the helm of the band. With Ham's health a concern, I've read that Ham has given his son and daughters control and direction of the band. Third, I didn't hear the band play any Chicano or Tejano music. They played modern funky, hip, urban music for a younger audience and Salsa music for the broader, mature Latin audience. In order to continue the legend, Tortilla Factory has to appeal to a younger, more hip audience who listens to hip hop, reggaeton and rap. This audience does not listen to Tejano music and the evidence is on MTV, Mun2 and MTV3. Salsa music has broad appeal to both young and old and a large cross section of people. It doesn't mean you have to abandon Tejano music but inorder to continue the legend you have to evolve or re-invent yourself to appeal to the current audience or market. Lastly, Tortilla Factory hired a publicist, Dean Lofton. You hire a publicist to put your name out there to the public who does not know your name.

You need to see Tortilla Factory perform. You will definitely like what you hear and you'll ask yourself "Why haven't I heard this band before?"

Review: Austin Vida's Nacional Records Listening Party

I attended Austin Vida's Nacional Records Listening Party on Tuesday March 2nd and had a great time. This is the second Listening Party in this series that I have attended and you will definitely find me at the next party on March 30, 2010.

There are several things I have enjoyed about the Listening Party:

First, I like the venue, Mi Casa Tamales and Cantina at 503 East 6th Street in Austin, Texas. Mi Casa has a long bar where you can sit or just hang out while you watch three big screen televisions. There is plenty of additional sitting with tables and chairs and a long bench sit the length of the venue. Mi Casa not only provides a really comfortable atmosphere, they have tamales! They offer delicious pork, chicken, chicken with verde sauce and vegetarian tamales and they are large and over stuffed with the filling. This fact that they offer tamales as well as drinks sets Mi Casa apart from surrounding venues. Additionally, they have a good sound system and ample floor space for dancing or just standing close to the band or DJ.

Second, the DJ and the music. DJ Chorizo Funk spins some excellent funky, soulful Latin tunes. I've been to a lot of events and venues where the DJ is the focal point and the DJ either makes or breaks the event. DJ Chorizo Funk makes this party happen. He grabs you with his music as soon as you walk in the door and keeps your attention for the rest of the night. I found myself, as well as other people, saying "Damn he's good." The Nacional Records CD releases have also been pretty good with Chocquibtown being my favorite. Check out DJ Chorizo Funk's website,, www.djchorizofunk.wordpress.com and listen to his music, I promise you'll like it as much as I did.

Last but not least, the Give Aways! When you come into Mi Casa, you are given a ticket that will put you into the drawings for prizes. The prizes include copies of Nacional's CD releases, Nacional Records T-shirts and stickers plus the Grand Prize. The past two grand prizes have been pretty good and definitely a good reason to come to the Listening Party. The first party gave away two tickets to Austin's Carnaval and this recent party gave away two tickets to Los Amigos Invisible show on Friday April 2, 2010 at Antone's.

Oh, I almost forgot the most important reason I like the Listening Party, the people I've met. I've met some really cool people and shared some tamales and good conversation. Tuesdays are that much better. Hope to see you there next time.

Even though Este Vato just released their new album, they have been working on some new tunes. I had the opportunity to record one of their new songs at Trophy's Bar and Grill on January 30, 2010. The name of the song is "Zombie Land" and it has a funky beat while still staying true to their music style and message. I also like this song because Este Vato is exploring their musical talent and possibilities. By stretching the musical envelope, Este Vato will create more great music and broaden their audience. Este Vato is definitely ready for the challenge and the next level.

A quick note about Trophy's: I like Trophy's Bar and Grill because it has the feel of a neighborhood bar. It has great music, it's quaint, feels homey, has a bar, pool tables, tables and chairs plus sofas. There is also an outdoor patio in back that you can just hangout. Parking is also ample.

Album Review: ESTE VATO

Este Vato, one of my favorite bands and once an up and coming band, now a well established, well placed band has a new CD. The CD is self titled and contains 7 great songs. Their sound combines Mexican Cumbia, Rock, Latin and Fusion. The use of an Emcee and DJ give Este Vato depth and a totally unique sound.

One of the things that really impresses me about Este Vato is that they stay true to their music and message. They insist on their own original music and lyrics. I can truly say I have never heard them play a cover song although it would be very easy to do. They also insist on making their audience aware of the plight and struggles of not only Latinos but of all peoples against injustice, the corrupt industrial machine,"Quemadura," and repressive governments. Their message also includes the power, "El Poder," that people have collectively and the pride in their Mexican heritage and flag, "Tres Colores." This album is also a very danceable album should you choose to.

Manny Go Crazy Is Back

I wrote my first blog back in October 31, 2008,"Este Vato Debutes at the Flamingo Cantina." It was my first attempt at "blogging" and although I don't actively blog now, it doesn't mean I've stopped seeing bands. In fact, quite the opposite has happened, I've gone to see so many bands that it would be very difficult and very time consuming to write about all of them. I'll start to write on key or special band events and post posters of events of interest.

Nike SB Paul Rodriguez/Ice Cube Commercial

I was watching the Maloof Money Cup, a skateboard competition, and a commercial caught my attention. The commercial starts with "Today Was A Good Day" by Ice Cube. If you follow my blog, I went to see Ice Cube at the Mohawk last year and you know how much fun I had. To continue, they show a skateboarder, Paul Rodriguez III, skating down the street doing tricks with his board and at one point the skateboard gets away. Well, that's all I'm going to say, you'll just have to watch the video below. Chris Cole won the competition and $100,000.

Este Vato Re-visited at The Tiniest Bar in Texas

June 5, 2009 Austin, Texas - I first saw Este Vato perform back in October 2008 at Flamingo Cantina. In fact Este Vato was my very first blog. I liked them back then and I like them even more now. I've seen Este Vato perform a total of four times. First at the Flamingo Cantina, second at Trophy's Bar and Grill in January, third at the Mohawk for the Remezcal.com En Tu Ciudad Tour in March and last Friday at the Tinies t Bar in Texas.

I've gotten to know the guys in Este Vato and can honestly say they are a very friendly and approachable group of talented musicians. I always look forward to seeing and hearing them perform.

Este Vato has transformed from a newly formed band back in October with only five songs, to a band with a solid playlist, new CD in progress, and with a lot of confidence and stage presence. The band has done a good job of establishing their name and their Cumbia Rock/Latin Fusion sound in a short time frame and in a very competitive music market.

Friday night Este Vato played solidly and with confidence despite the bar's sound technician not showing up for work. They worked the sound board and managed the sound levels excellently. They played my favorite song "El Poder" along with "Quemadura,"Mundo En Fuego" and others. They also played three new songs, "Balazo," "A Bit of a Rattlesnake," and "Movimiento."

I really liked the new songs. They had the familiar Cumbia Rock with an added rock guitar sound in "A Bit of a Rattlesnake." In "Balazo," Rey Treviño used a sample of the news broadcast and shot fired on that infamous day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. "El Poder" also samples recorded speeches by Ché Guevara and Martin Luther King. The samplings adds depth
and impact to both of the song's message.

One of the things I was really disappointed with Friday night was the audience involvement. Every time I've been to a Este Vato performance the audience is out there dancing and having a good time. Even though the audience was appreciative of Este Vato and they sincerely applauded their performance, this audience was not a party crowd. There were three lovely ladies that got up to dance but I think they got discouraged for lack of other dancers and sat down. The only other person who got up to dance, without a partner, was Joaquin Garza. I have seen Jaoquin at all the Este Vato performances and just thought he was an avid fan. I thought it was time to meet this guy. It turns out that Joaquin is Chano Lopez's brother and Chano states "the song "Na Pos" is actually a nod to him named after one of his sayings..."Na Pos."

I think the band uses Joaquin as a plant and at a certain que from the band, Joaquin starts dancing. The audience sees someone dancing and then they join in. It sounds far fetched but it could happen?

This is the first time I've been to the Tiniest Bar in Texas. I like the outdoor set up. There is a small covered stage for bands to perform. The audience area has picnic tables, patio tables and chairs on a gravel covered area. The audience area also has a small covered patio and the area overall accommodates approximately 50 people plus comfortably. There is also an enclosed, elevated patio area, away form the stage, with table and chairs that holds approximately 15-20 people. Two bars in both areas provide alcoholic beverages for your consumption pleasure. Please Drink Responsibly.

Parking spots were hard to find. There were parking meters all the way around the block surrounding the bar but they were all taken. The possible explanation is all the condos in the immediate area. I circled the block a couple of times but with no luck. The second time I circled the block, I saw a sign for $5 parking. The parking was located at The Monarch. They have a covered parking garage and they had available spots. The Monarch lot is adjacent to the bar so I lucked out. The parking garage and surrounding area is well lit and there's plenty of traffic.

Overall it was a good night. I'll have to wait to see Este Vato again because they are going to Laredo and Hebronville, Texas this June to play some shows on their Pacopalooza 2009 tour. I wish them "Good Luck" and we'll see you when you get back.

Monte Negro: Free SXSW Show and New Video

Monte Negro is one of my most favorite bands. I've seen them a couple of times and look forward to seeing them again and again. They will perform at a Free Show this Friday, at Mexi Arte Museum, Austin, Texas.

GIRL IN A COMA-San Antonio's indie rockers, sisters Nina and Phanie Diaz and friend Jenn Alva, will be headlining the show. They have a unique sound which their Myspace page tags as Garage, Rock, Punk. I've seen this band perform and they will rock you in and out and all around. Presently, their new video, Their Cell, is airing on several music video channels. If your not a fan now, you will be.

PINATA PROTEST-When I first heard that this San Antonio band played punk with an accordian, I knew I had to see them. It's been almost a year since I've seen Pinata Protest but it's time for a Mexican mosh pit throw down. You don't go to see or hear Pinata Protest, you physically participate. I do have to warn you, you may come out with a few bruises. They have been described as "puro pedo punk rock" and that's pretty accurate.

ESTE VATO-One of my top favorite, up and coming bands, Austin-based Este Vato combines Latin , fusion, cumbia rock with electronic samples. I've seen Este Vato a few times and I always look forward to seeing and meeting them again. Now with Este Vato, come with your dancing shoes on. They definitely have a beat and a rythme that will make you want to find a dance partner. If you didn't bring a partner, Este Vato always attracts a lot of good looking dancing partners.

FREE WEEK in Austin, Texas: Beerland Texas

January 4, 2009: The week of January 2nd-10th is FREE WEEK in Austin, Texas for a select number of Austin clubs and venues. These clubs do not charge a cover which means you can spend your money on other things. It’s a great way to promote the clubs and especially in these hard economic times, provide inexpensive entertainment. I’m not really quite sure if the bands make any money during FREE WEEK but I did my part by buying a couple of CD’s from the bands. I like buying their CD’s the night of the show because the money goes directly into the band's pocket and I also use the CD to refresh my memory of that night.

I wanted to take advantage of FREE WEEK because I’ve had to cut my entertainment budget. I will probably go out less or try to get on someone’s guest list to get into a venue. I really didn’t know what club to go to or what band to see, so I obtained a A ustin Chronicle and went to do512.com to see all the possibilities. I decided on something different, something that I wasn’t that familiar with and out of my comfort zone. I decided on Beerland because they had three groups that play Psychobilly/Rockabilly/Punk music. Because I’m not that familiar with this genre, I will use quotes for reviews from other sources and credit will be given accordingly.

This was my first time to B eerland. I’ve walked by it going to other clubs and have seen their listing in the Chronicle and do512.com. To some extent, it’s typical to the other Austin clubs I’ve been to except for the chicken wire wall suspended from the ceiling ready for deployment. The venue is small, holds about 200+ people comfortably, dark and hot tonight. Here we are its winter in Texas, its 80 degrees outside and hotter in the club, I was literally sweating. The wait to get a drink was long because people were either hot, needed something cold, or they had some extra money in their pockets. The club does have some seating available in the form of couches, some tables and chairs. I recommend you get to the club early to get a good seat.

The first act was Izzy Cox. According to her Myspace page, Izzy “is an anarchist crooner….she has coined the style Voodoobilly Jazz as her own”. Izzy hails from Austin, Texas, Hollywood, California, Brooklyn, New York and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She also has an interesting background but I’ll let you read it on Myspace, at this time izzycox.com is coming soon. I like Izzy’s combination rockabilly, western swing, murder ballad style. She sings her heart out and with a lot of emotion and has a commanding stage presence. I felt that each song was a story and she wanted me to feel her pain, joy, happiness and sorrow. Tonight Izzy and her guitar, accompanied by Megan Harris on trumpet from Waco, Texas, were the band. Wow, two powerful women. Izzy is a must see performance and will be in the Austin area until March. I bought Izzy Cox’s Love Letters From The Electric Chair CD and my favorite tunes were: Devil, Devil; Belle Gunness; Man Of The Clothe; and not on CD, Fucking and Fighting and Bad Bad Woman.

Mr. Lewis and The Funeral 5 was the next band. The band consist of six members and all dressed in suit and ties, with most band members wearing a fedora or slicked back hair. They are some cool looking “Dudes.” The band’s music is hard to describe so I am borrowing a review that I found on austin360.com.

“Who is Mr. Lewis & The Funeral 5 anyway? Insane circus rock purveyors? Maybe. Are they what it would sound like if you trapped Queens Of The Stone Age in a dank basement and force fed them Irish whiskey and Tom Waits music? It's quite possible. It's a better guess to say that they are a band that has set out to prove that funerals can be fun if thrown by the right party planner. They couple lyrics about murder, drinking, and just a general desperation as if they were straight out of a Greek tragedy, along with music comprised of jubilant, tuneful song writing to come up with a sound that isn't quite average. Top it off with a whimsical grin, and you've got their unique brand of good old fashioned drinking music. They may take over the world. They may take over a 3 block radius. They may take over the payments on a reasonably priced 1989 Ford Taurus with slight body damage and two new tires. Who's to say? These are all just words anyway.”

Mr. Lewis and The Funeral 5 is a very entertaining band. I like the way the baritone sax gives the band depth and the additional tom tom drums gives the music and sound that heavy pulsating beat. You can’t help but go with the beat. Mr. Lewis does a good job of interacting with the audience using his dry wit and humor. I would put this band on your must see band list. You won’t be disappointed. I liked the following songs from their set and Myspace: Black Coffee Night; My Girl Suicide; The Alleyway King; Tuesday Is The New Monday. These songs and others are on their Murder and The Art of The Dance CD which can be purchased on amazon.com.

The last group for the night was Flametrick Subs. This band’s Myspace page describes their music as “Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Punk….Johnny Cash shooting speed in the graveyard...with the Devil”. That description is correct. The lead singer and guitar player, Buster Crash, has a wicked voice and reminds me of music that you would hear in a early 50/60's suspense movie. Buster's voice perfectly fits the Rockabilly, Reverend Horten Heat style music that the band plays. Flametrick Subs, personally, reminds me a little of Tito and Tarantula, which I blogged in October of 2008. One thing I found incredible about the band is that the bass player, De Marco, doesn’t have a left hand, he plays with his wrist. I was amazed and WOW-ed by his talent and playing style. The drummer, Miss Fortune, is a petite woman who stands as she plays the drums Rockabilly style. You have to make a point to see Flametrick Subs because their music rocks and rolls. I was always a fan of Rockabilly but was introduced to Psychobilly, Punk that night. “I am now a believer.”

Parking that night was hard to find because of Free Week. I had to circle around several time to find a parking space. I finally parked in a lot across from the Salvation Army facilities, corner of Neches St. and E. 7th St., and paid $5.00. The lot was well lighted and an attendant was present.

After the show finished at 1:30 AM, just outside the club’s door is, Hot Dog King, a trailer that sells hotdogs. The trailer has various hot dogs but tonight I decided on their Chicago dog for $4.00. Actually, it was a great tasting Chicago dog with all the toppings. Strongly recommend you stop by the trailer and have a hot dog. You won’t be disappointed.

All I can say about tonight is: "Life is good in Austin, Texas, Live Music Capital of the World."

Ice Cube at Club Mohawk

December 14, 2008-When I found out that Ice Cube was coming to Austin, I had to go. You may be asking, “What’s a guy like you doing at an Ice Cube concert?” Well my profile states that I like ALL types of music and I really do. Anyway, I got into Rap and Gansta Rap because my kids grew up with MTV. I also found MTV interesting and entertaining not to mention this was music history in the making. Of course MTV played music videos but then introduced rap music. Many of the rappers were sampling songs from music I grew up listening to and now my kids were listening to a new version of that old song. Then “YO! MTV Raps” came out and all hell broke loose. Gansta Rap was introduced to the mainstream audience.

All this sound familiar? Whether you’re my age or grew up in the MTV generation, Rap music was here to stay.

Ice Cube or O’Shea Jackson, is on my short list of must see rappers along with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Sugarhill Gang, RunDMC and the Beastie Boys. He can be credited for getting rap from the street to mainstream USA in the late 1980s. Ice Cube was the lyrical brains behind MWA which consisted of : Dr Dre, Easy-E, MC Ren, DJ Yella and Ice Cube. In 1990 he went solo and in 1993 he teamed up with WC and Mack 10 to form Westside Connection. Ice Cube also has a successful movie career with credits in "Boys in the Hood," several "Friday" movies, "Barbershop" and "Are We There Yet" to name a few movies. If that wasn’t enough, Ice Cube established his won Lench Mob Records label.

The Mohawk hosted the show this night. In one of my previous blogs, I stated that I really like the Mohawk and its tri-level set up. The night was cool and breezy but nice for a December. The tickets for the show were $25, a little high for me, but it was Ice Cube! I positioned myself on the patio above the audience and facing the stage. The crowd really didn’t come in until Ice Cube took the stage at about 9:30 PM with an estimated 400 packed fans.

I really liked this show because Ice Cube does an excellent job of engaging the audience. He talks to the crowd and the crowd happily responds. DubC, Ice Cube’s partner, would ask Ice Cube a question and then Ice Cube would respond and ask the audience the question. The audience would respond and then Ice Cube would use the answer as an introduction to the next song. Ice Cubed sang for about two solid hours but we could all have gone all night.

Note: Personally I don't use the same language that you hear on gansta rap music but I understand the artistic value and impact it provides to song and message . If you are offended by such language, do not listen or view the videos. Thanks.

The sound system was pretty good that night but Ice Cube kept asking for more volume. He frequently would use the sound of a shot gun cocking and firing throughout the concert. Plus the thumping sound of the bass in the music mesmerized the audience into mindless submission, me included.

Now there is plenty of free parking if you get to the Mohawk before the show but watch out for people who guide you to an available parking spot and then ask for a "donation." I’d stayed away from those guys and parked in another free location.

I do have a complaint about the Mohawk restroom in the inside bar area. You have approximately 300 men, most of them drinking, trying to use a restroom with two urinals and one stall. Wow!

Overall one of the best concerts/shows I’ve been to ever. I strongly recommend that you catch an Ice Cube show next time he's in your area. You will not be disappointed.
